Libraries of Berlin
Sadly, I’m not much of a bookworm and haven’t developed strong reading habits over the years. But I do want to sit down and read! When I try this at home, though, I get easily distracted and end up cleaning home or playing guitar instead 🙂 So, I decided to try something different: reading books in libraries! But I also wanted to add my type of spice and fun for this activity. In this post, you’ll get to explore Berlin libraries through my lens, pick up some tips if you’re new to the library scene here, and check out my shortlist of favorites.
Libraries through my lens(literally!)
Recently, I had the chance to explore several libraries in Berlin, where I spent at least 5-6 hours a day for a distraction-free reading experience. Before planning these visits, I did bit of research and discovered that many of these libraries have remarkable architecture. To capture and enhance my experience, I brought along my camcorder and recorded my visits and created a short movie/documentary. I chose not to add music so that viewers can fully enjoy the libraries’ natural soundscapes.
For library by library timestamps, check out the video on Youtube. You can find all the libraries mentioned in this Google Maps list.
Tips for first time visitors
If you haven’t yet visited the libraries in Berlin and are planning one, here are some useful tips to know:
- No payment or registration is required to enter most libraries for reading or working (State Libraries are the exception, where you’ll need a free access card).
- To borrow books, you’ll need a library card. The type of card varies depending on the library:
- VÖBB Library Card: Costs €10 per year.
- State Library Card: Free of charge.
- All libraries offer free Wi-Fi, electrical sockets, as well as printers and scanners.
- The libraries are heated, making them cozy spots during colder days!
- Opening hours vary by day of the week, and District Central Libraries generally have shorter hours compared to other libraries.
My shortlist
Based on my experience, here’s how I’d rate the libraries. But first, let me give some context about my criteria:
- I use libraries primarily for focused reading.
- Due to neck pain, ergonomic chairs and desks are important to me.
- I generally prefer university libraries for their extended hours and focused atmosphere.
- I bring my own books, so I haven’t used the borrowing services yet.
- Living in Charlottenburg, I consider accessibility based on proximity.
- Since I work weekdays, libraries open on Sundays or after 18:00 score higher.
- I prefer spacious, airy spaces with soft lightening.
Given my criteria, Jacob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum and Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz have the highest scores. If Universitätsbibliotheken TU Berlin und UdK Berlin was open on Sunday’s this would be my go to library due to walking away distance. Among the district libraries, Hansabibliothek is my favorite for its cozy atmosphere and stunning garden view. For a detailed comparison, check out the table below 😉
Conclusion
Overall, I really enjoyed my experience. I finished 3 books and have started to read a new one during these visits. Spending time in these stunning buildings gives a welcoming feeling that is hard to explain. Whenever I need a distraction-free reading environment, I’ll definitely be using libraries.
